About This Game

The year is 2051. Location: SATAZIUS, a long-abandoned planet.
The cruiser Agano was on patrol when it was attacked and stricken by a confederacy of space pirates that had established a base on SATAZIUS. The pirates attacked the Agano intending to steal the assault ship ‘Trafalgar’ that was stowed aboard the Agano, but the Trafalgar made a successful emergency escape.
The crew of the Trafalgar calculated the probability of successfully escaping the pirate overrun planet at 0.02%; the probability of charging into and successfully destroying the pirate base was 1%. Taking the higher probability escape plan, the crew of the Trafalgar turned their ship toward the pirate horde and began their charge into the heart of SATAZIUS.
SATAZIUS is an awesome old school side-scrolling arcade shooter by accomplished indie developer ASTRO PORT (Gigantic Army, Armed Seven, Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser), featuring an arsenal of 13 types of upgradeable weapons, power-ups, obstacles and boss encounters that arcade veterans will enjoying getting to grips with. Customize your ship by selecting two side weapons which can be cycled and deployed at any time during the action, and a charge attack to unleash massive destruction.
There is a plethora of enemy ships to shoot down, tight spaces to navigate, power ups to grab, and bonuses to acquire. Featuring great stage design, a thumping techno soundtrack, fast and outstanding action, old school graphics and giant bosses, SATAZIUS is a true throwback to old-school arcade shoot ‘em ups, replete with homages which will be instantly recognizable to fans of arcade shooters.

Graphics are good. Music is decent. Good level design. Lots of different weapons, most of which are pretty cool and effective. Big boss battles. All in all, very reminiscent of Gradius games.

So why do I not recommend it?

Because if you can't play it properly, then the rest means nothing.

This game forces you to use the analog stick with no option of using the Dpad. I've been a huge fan of shoot 'em ups since the NES days, and while I'm no expert, I am pretty darn good at them. In this game, however, I was dying from the simplest of things (things that the developers probably hadn't even intended to be a threat) merely because the analog stick makes it too difficult to maneuver your ship with precision. I see no reason to limit the directional controls in a 2D game to the analog stick.

If a patch comes out that allows the directional controls to be changed to the Dpad, I will instantly change my rating to a thumbs up.. Ohhhh, this scratched a good itch.... Genius design. Tough enough to prove a challenge, but leaves it to your intution to figure out how to progress. Not unfairly difficult. Satisfying side-scrolling shoot-em-up gameplay.. I was looking through some random forums for decent old school space ship shooters on Steam, and Satazius was mentioned "A LOT", I thought "Satazius huh? Kinda sounds like Gradius, I'll give it a whirl".... And my god, if sounding like Gradius is one thing, looking and playing like Gradius is another.

Satazius is an exceptional game that has CAPCOM's seal of approval, and it's one of the better inde shooters I've played. Basically take Gradius, and take away all of it's medication, force feed it a diet of protein shakes and suffering, then you'll have something that doesn't even come close to Satazius, this game is hard as hell!!! The beautiful thing about Satazius is that the similarities are all there, but it's not a shameless rip-off. For a starts it's way harder, and it's a lot prettier.

I find it difficult to write about shooters like this, well because they're pretty much the same. But the moral of the story here is "Why fix what is not ultimately broken." If CAPCOM put its stamp on it, then it's got to be good right? That's Satazius, an old school side scrolling space shooter, that get's everything right, no complaints from me. Take it from someone who plays these games non-stop.

... And seriously... Good luck with this one, it's well hard!. Good ole shmup fun. I am still working on Normal mode at this time, and I am loving every moment of it. The weapon upgrade system gives you some learning curve\/fun making you figure out which works best for each level\/enemy. There are moments where you have to quickly navigate through small areas while avoiding smashing into stuff\/getting blasted into scraps. \\m\/ (=_=) \\m\/ The Music gets me pumped, and the SFX are choice. The game isn't that long, but the harder difficulties give it decent replayability. I love this game. Classic Game Room Sent me. SATAAAZIUUUUUS!. Satazius is a fairly standard spaceship shooter. While it's far from the quality of a Tecnosoft or Toaplan shmup, it's still pretty fun and worth a few bucks if it's on sale. The level design varies from stupidly easy to cheap and frustrating, the graphics are dull, and the music is bland, but if you're desperate for a shmup, you could do far worse.. This is a must-play for fans of R-Type and Gradius.. This game could be called Salamander and it wouldn't remind me of Gradius more than it already does. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Edit on 5\/25\/16 - Just wanted to give some extra props for the addition of achievements a few months back. I had uninstalled the game a long time ago, and missed the update in December. Finally noticing the achievements gave me a perfect excuse to go back and enjoy the game again. If you're a fan of Gradius-style shoot-em-ups, give this a go!. An excellent, traditional shoot-'em-up from Astro Port.

From the colourful, weighty visual work and sound direction to some of the strongest '80s\/90s-style' shooter game design I've seen in a while, nearly every aspect of Satazius comes together to make for a thrilling game all around. Pad controls generally feel good, the action is exciting, the game is suitably twitch-based and the whole thing is just a joy to play.

Recommedend to all shoot-'em-up fans. In fact, I'm sure even a few with little experience in the genre will have a good time, considering how slick a of a production this is.

But mainly, it's just good fun. You do like fun, right? No? How about millions of explosions then?
